Suren Mallick
Coach
"If you want to go fast go alone.
If you want to go far go together."
Suren Mallick resides in Frisco, TX, with his wife Pammi and their son Apoorv. His roots trace back to Benaras, India, a sacred and holy city visited by millions each year.
Passionate about running, Suren also enjoys reading, catching up with friends, and networking with new people when he's not on the road. As a technology enthusiast, he loves brainstorming new ideas and discussing how technology will influence human behavior. Suren is a firm believer in continuous improvement and the growth mindset theory, striving to be a lifelong learner.
Spiritually inclined, Suren dedicates time to meditation and worship, finding balance in his spiritual practices.
Professionally, Suren is a technology and product leader with extensive experience leading large-scale business transformations across telecom, utilities, healthcare, and public safety enterprises. He has lived and worked in the US, India, Canada, and Hong Kong. Currently, he works at Citibank, where he leads strategy, operations, and transformation for the business operations reporting function.
Reflecting on his running journey, Suren recalls that during his years in Benaras, he was one of the least athletic individuals in school and college, a trend that continued into his professional life. Overweight for most of his younger years, he accepted it as part of his identity. It wasn't until he was about 30 that he decided to take up running to lose weight and improve his overall health. Though he began on his own, he quickly realized that it might not be his cup of tea.
However, with some persistence and effort beyond his comfort zone, Suren began to see improvement. Like many others, he soon found himself hooked on running. Starting with half a mile, then progressing to a full mile, and gradually more, Suren completed his first 5K after eight months of consistent effort. At the time, he believed he had reached his limit and convinced himself that he had achieved his goal.
Looking back, Suren recognizes that to go further, he lacked a coach, a structured training program, and the camaraderie of fellow runners. While his professional life underwent several changes, running remained on his mind. Eventually, after settling in Frisco, he reached out to GV Ganesh, a member of RHWB in Dallas, in January 2021, seeking help to restart his running journey with the goal of completing a 10K. Although Season 5 of RHWB had already begun, GV graciously offered to coach him on the side. Over the next 14 weeks, GV shared a structured training schedule, monitored Suren's runs, and provided valuable guidance, encouraging him to train for a half marathon. Initially, the idea seemed daunting, but throughout 2021, Suren progressed from 5 miles to 7 miles and, in April 2021, completed his first half marathon.
Following this achievement, Suren officially joined RHWB for Season 6. In 2021 and 2022, he completed seven half marathons, including the 50th and 51st editions of the Dallas Half Marathon. RHWB has transformed him in many ways, helping him regain fitness and boosting his confidence.
Running has now become a family affair, thanks to RHWB. In Season 8, Suren was joined by his wife and son, who ran their first 10K. In Season 9, he completed his first full marathon at the Jersey City Marathon. In Season 10, Suren trained for his first World Major Marathon in Chicago and successfully completed it. He concluded Season 10 with a personal record (PR) performance at the Dallas Half Marathon.
